I am reading up their license terms and definitions, here and here this one detailing more on my requirements, that is VOSE. I am installing this windows server in a VMware esxi environment as a guest VM, which means that it will not be installed in physical server. That is incorrect. You’re allowed 2 VMs per Standard license, so long as they are running on the same host.

Only if Windows standard runs in Physical server? Not Windows. Your only option is to run windows as a VM. Server R2 Standard licensing allows 2. I think you’re getting confused about the host licensing. The only time you need to worry about licensing the host with a Microsoft licensing is if your baremetal install is a Microsoft product — i. Windows with Hyper-V role. If you’re using another product, you need to refer to the licensing scheme of that particular product for the baremetal install.

Xen is always free, and VMware have free and paid options. Neither of these have anything to do with any Microsoft license. Yes you can have 2 VMs. As far as I remember there was some limitation only with Parallels Virtuozzo regarding mixing of editions. The cost of using Windows Server does not change based on the hypervisor being used since the use rights virtualization, number of permitted instances etc.

Then licence the maximum number of VMs that will run on that server. Not the number that will run on it most of the time. So clustering, vMotion whatever will change the max VMs that run on the server. And you have to licence for the max, not the normal.

Also, vMotion: I think you need Software Assurance to allow this to occur. Otherwise you’re limited to 1 VM move every 30 days. Though I’m a little bit hazy on this particular point. Thanks all for replies. The second document indicated the same, that hypervisor vendor doesn’t matter. I have no intention the nest hypervisors. I have only one vmware ESXI 5. I was planning to buy another Windows license to separate WSUS and Kaspersky console, and just happened to look at existing license.

As a side note, there is no vMotion and both guest VM instances if I do install will be active. Do you have enough actual hardware resources on the host to handle the second VM? If your current VM is maxing out CPU and memory, perhaps you should look at allocating it more resources.. A second VM is going to put more overhead on the host, as you’ll also need resources for the OS. The hypervisor is running:. Right, increasing RAM and cores is an option that I already had in mind if this license thing didn’t workout.

I ran it for few months without issues until now. If I install a second server, I will move the spiceworks or zabbix out and run it on old server.

Are you sure you’re not running into a different issue, like memory ballooning? Also, you say nothing about vCPU allocation to the guests. Anyway, bottom line for your licensing question is that every R2 Standard license does in fact give you the option to install 2 VMs, provided they are on the same host.

So you’re good to go there. You’re going to want to be careful about that Win7 VM though — unless you have a volume license with SA, or a VDA license, you might not be strictly compliant.

Thanks Gabrielle for continued support. I missed on the vcpu, the has 2 vcpu and rest has one each. Now I remember that I had zabbix powered down, until issues were resolved. So that must have given the esxi host some slack. Also a related problem that I am fearing is, in normal operation there will be four servers trying to connected to each Windows clients: WSUS, KSC, Spiceworks and Zabbix to extract, push or pull data, updates, etc.

I am not sure how other IT teams manage. I didn’t know Microsoft had rigid requirements for these too. I will look for licensing details on Win7 pro. This topic has been locked by an administrator and is no longer open for commenting. To continue this discussion, please ask a new question.

I got a brand new Dell server but no information on how to license these 2 VMs. How do I go about this? I can only seem to find information about automatic key activation, however that only works in Datacenter edition apparently. My understanding is that you’re permitted to run three machines off the same license on standard so long as you use one for the hypervisor with a hyper-v role and the other two are installed on that box using the same key.

You use the key посмотреть больше. You can have 2 Windows R2 VM’s using the same key. You can install it on your host as the Hypervisor if you wish as long as Hyper-V is the only role installed. If not, windows server 2012 r2 standard (2cpu/2 vms) free burn one of your two licenses. If it’s the latter, then you are short one license. Otherwise, your licensing is correct.

They say I need to activate them. I tried using magic key finder on the host to pull the key but that key won’t work.

Where can I find the key? If it’s OEM, there should be sticker somewhere on the chassis that has the key. That is what you put into Server Manager. If it won’t let you enter a key or it says it’s invalid, check out this:. Brand Representative for Dell. I don’t know what key magic key finder pulled for you, but you should have a CoA for R2 that has the 25 digit PID. You will use that key for the VMs.

The product key for the host OS is the same with your 2 VMs. Selfstudy is an IT service provider. I have seen this in were OEMs often some with 1 key. Some rare cases a software vendor has made a agreement to bundle the Windows Server OS with a product.

I don’t remember the exact name for the program ,but these only came with 1 license. Does OEM Come with a windows server 2012 r2 standard (2cpu/2 vms) free seat license is a good question. You also have to pass the bios information through your hypervisor if it is OEM. Licensing for was different. You use the license key on the OEM sticker attached to the chassis.

I’m not sure what you mean by this.
