This article is for everyone who uses Xero. We recommend installing the Xero Verify authenticator app so you can receive push notifications for quick and easy authentication. Multi-factor authentication MFA provides a second layer of security that stops anyone else accessing your Xero account, even if they know your password.
For security reasons, we recommend you install the authenticator app on a different device to the one you use to access Xero. This is especially important if you share the device you use to access Xero with others. To avoid this, we recommend you install the authenticator app on a different device. You can choose your authenticator app but we recommend Xero Verify. It’s the only app using push notifications to log in to Xero. With push notifications, a message pops up on your smartphone or tablet.
Xero Verify only sends notifications when you’re logging in to Xero. If you don’t have a smartphone, or can’t use your smartphone for MFA, you can install an authenticator app such as Authy Authy website to your laptop or desktop computer. To set up MFA, you’ll need to access your Xero organisation using a web browser. You can’t set up MFA using the Xero mobile app. Follow the steps in Xero to add your Xero account to the app. Add a backup email address, then click Continue.
Your answers can only contain letters or numbers, and not any symbols or special characters. Even if it’s not required, setting up MFA gives you extra security. While logged in to Xero, click your initials or profile image at the top right of the screen, then select Account.
They also need to be five or more characters. You’re now set up to use MFA next time you log into Xero. You can install an authenticator app on your laptop or desktop computer. If you can’t install apps on your work computer yourself, ask your IT team to install an authenticator app for you, either on your computer or your organisation’s server.
There are various authenticator apps available, such as our recommended app Authy. Alternatively, you can follow the steps below to do this. Click Set up multi-factor authentication to get started. If you’re not yet required to set up MFA but want to get started, do this while you’re logged in. Click your initials or profile image at the top right of the screen and select Account.
Under Additional Security , next to Multi-factor authentication , click Set up. This will take you to the start of the MFA process.
When prompted to choose an authenticator app, select Use my own app. In a separate tab on your web browser, go to the Authy website and follow the steps to download Authy to your desktop. When you enter a phone number, you can select how you receive the verification code. Then, enter the code to get into Authy. Add Xero as an account within Authy. To find the code or key, return to Xero and click Can’t scan the QR code? Enter a setup key instead. Next to Setup Key , click Copy.
Go back to the Authy app, click on the plus icon to add an account. Paste the code or key and click Add Account. As Xero doesn’t appear on the options to choose from, we need to create it. Select one of the options, for example Generic Blue , then to rename it type ‘Xero’ in the Account Name field at the top of the screen.
Select 6-digit as the token length, and click Save. Once Authy is generating codes, return to Xero and click Enter Code. Enter the six digit code from the Authy app and click Confirm. Ask our community of customers, accountants and bookkeepers.

Xero has upgraded its security measures by switching to multi-factor authentication. Xero Verify is a new authentication app, which provides a more secure way for users to access their Xero accounts. Change the device you use for MFA – Xero Central
The best way to manage all your MFA accounts is to use the Authy app. It enables you to have a single mobile app for all your MFA accounts and you can sync them across multiple devices, even accessing them on the desktop.
Important: If any sites prompt you to use Google Authenticator for multi-factor authentication, note that you can always substitute the Authy MFA app instead.
Although they work in similar ways, Authy is more feature-rich and allows for multi-device syncing, cloud-backups, and easier account recovery should you change or lose your phone or device. Read more information on the features of Authy here. Log into Xero with your username and password.
